Phoibe (c. 443 – 429 BCE) was an Athenian daughter and protégé of the Spartan misthios Kassandra during the early on Peloponnesian War.

Biography

Early life

Born in Athens sometime in 443 BCE,[i] Phoibe left the polis when she was all the same a baby.[two] After her parents died,[iii] she ended upwardly on the island of Kephallonia, with simply a wooden eagle she'd named Chara to remind her of her female parent.[4]

Befriending Kassandra

Around 434 BCE, Phoibe was begging on the streets of Sami and met Kassandra, a Spartan exile and misthios. After being given some coins, Phoibe was taken in by the Spartan. She so grew up under the wings of the Kephallonian entrepreneur and Kassandra's friend Markos. In plough, the girl's personality and groundwork resonated with the Spartan, and the two forged a tearing bond akin to that of a mentor and pupil.[1]

In 431 BCE, Markos borrowed a large amount of money from the thug Cyclops of Kephallonia in order to buy a large vineyard holding. Equally Markos was unable to repay his debts, Phoibe and Kassandra were regularly harassed by the Cyclops' thugs, though they were initially unaware of Markos' loan. Phoibe arrived at Kassandra'southward home, catching sight of her defeating two thugs sent by the Cyclops to collect Markos' debt and pay back for earlier instances of Kassandra causing trouble for the Cyclops. Phoibe after informed Kassandra of Markos' purchase, directing her to the vineyard near the Statue of Zeus on Mountain Ainos.[5]

Eventually, this culminated into Phoibe being kidnapped by a grouping of thugs sent past the Cyclops, who held her convict on Ktimene Beach. Afterward existence freed by Kassandra, she notified past the misthios of a mercenary named Talos the Rock-Fist, hired by the Cyclops to eliminate her.[3] [6]

Shortly after, Phoibe met with Kassandra subsequently she helped Markos with his errand, questioning why Kassandra let Markos boss her around. After Kassandra gave her an answer, Phoibe requested the misthios with an errand of her own, this time to aid her friend Kynna and her village Kausos, which had fallen nether the curse of blood fever.[7]

Old thereafter, Phoibe unknowingly became a pawn of Elpenor of the Cult of Kosmos, by providing his contact Krethos information about Kassandra which immune them to detect her.[8] This set in motion a serial of events which ultimately pushed Kassandra to get out the island. After learning that Kassandra was going to depart from Kephallonia, Phoibe spoke to her at the harbour of Sami, wanting to come along, simply Kassandra refused to take her. In the end, they did concord to see each other again, and Phoibe gave Kassandra her wooden pet eagle, Chara, equally a companion.[four]

Knowing that Kassandra would not return to Kephallonia anymore, Phoibe made the decision to leave the island. She arrived in Athens as a stowaway and plant other children, similar to her, and they joined up, forming a gang. This ended when they met Aspasia, a hetaera and a companion of Perikles, the leader of Athens. Aspasia offered Phoibe employment, and the daughter jumped at it. It's here that she encountered Kassandra again, much to the latter's surprise. Over the course of working for Aspasia, Phoibe helped Kassandra with diverse tasks including with her goal of dismantling the Cult and finding her family unit.[2]

In 429 BCE, when Kassandra returned to Athens later on discovering data almost her own mother, she found the metropolis in a state of chaos. Phoibe was running a task for Aspasia at the time and she briefly encountered Kassandra for the concluding fourth dimension.[9]

During the course of events, the Cult of Kosmos cornered Phoibe in the Odeon of Perikles and killed her. Upon discovering this, Kassandra was enraged and attacked Phoibe's killers. Kassandra bid goodbye to her young friend and gave her last rites, returning Chara to her. Earlier departing Athens, Kassandra tasked Sokrates and Hippokrates with giving Phoibe a proper funeral.[9] Phoibe was later buried in a cemetery outside Athens.[10]

Phoibe's tombstone was later visited by Kassandra and Sokrates seven years later in 422 BCE.[ten]

Simulation

When the Isu Aletheia created a simulation of the Underworld for the Kassandra to better learn how to wield the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus which Pythagoras had passed on to her, she met a simulated Phoibe within. She had drank Lethe's water and had forgotten Kassandra. The simulated Cyclops of Kephallonia forced her to drinkable it.[11] Regaining her memories, Phoibe resumes her quest to find her parents with Kassandra in tow.[12] When Phoibe goes off on her ain to save the survivor of the Cyclops's assail, although she was captured instead.[thirteen] After Phoibe was rescued by Kassandra and the Cyclops dealt with, Phoibe passed through the doorway to Elysium to her parents.[14]

Personality and characteristics

Phoibe was a feisty daughter with a passionate sense of independence. These qualities endeared her to Kassandra, only her stubbornness nonetheless challenged their relationship at times. Regardless, she managed to always maintain an optimistic approach in nearly circumstances.[15]

Behind the scenes

Phiobe is a graphic symbol introduced in the 2018 video game Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, and is voiced by the Greek player Olivia Lebedeva-Alexopoulou. Her proper noun, Φοιβη, is Greek and derives from the give-and-take φοιβος (phoibos), meaning 'bright, pure'.

A replica of Phoibe'south wooden eagle, Chara, can be interacted with in the modern solar day.
